چکیده
INTRODUCTION THE SIMPLE automatic act of breathing is essential to life, but may be interrupted in a variety of ways. Cessation of this act of breathing is not necessarily fatal if there is some means available to produce artificial respiration. However, should this assistance be lacking then death will always supervene. This article proposes to sketch the history of the various means of artificial respiration and to discuss the effects of its development upon the progress of physiology, medicine, surgery and resuscitation.
